Courage and helplessness

Protest and resistance, persecution and incarceration for political reasons are the topics of our exhibition. The exhibition tells of the National Socialist military judiciary in the Second World War and of the Torgau military prisons. The focus is on the persecuted, among them deserters and other members of the resistance against the National Socialist regime.

The exhibition also covers the Soviet special camps in Torgau after 1945 and includes political prisoners during the East-German Communist dictatorship. These included teenagers in the juvenile prison in Torgau. We show the prison conditions, shed light on the perpetrators and forge a link to the present. In interviews, former prisoners and their family members recount the consequences that political imprisonment has had to this day.
