Memorial Sites Along the Elbe
At the head of the bridge on the northern bank of the Elbe, a memorial site, a flag monument, and a work of art commemorate the Meeting on the Elbe and the wide-ranging historical significance of the former royal seat of Torgau.
Brückenkopf
The banks of the Elbe, which had been fortified since the 17th century, took on their present appearance in the 19th century when the former Saxon-Napoleonic state fortress was expanded into a Prussian garrison. At the start of World War II, the Wehrmacht prison Brückenkopf was established here; by 1940, it was already at full capacity with 1,000 inmates and was liberated in 1945. Since April 2026, the memorial at the bridgehead has served as a reminder of this history.

Flag Monument
In 1998, American and Soviet veterans of the Meeting on the Elbe created their own memorial in Torgau with this monument. Three flagpoles form an equilateral triangle. Originally, The Russian, American, and German flags are positioned at equal distances from one another and at the same height. For several years now, the European flag, the Saxon flag, and the German flag have been flown. At the base of the poles stand three memorial stones made from sandstone fragments of the historic Torgau Elbe Bridge.

„Doppelkopf“(double head)
The „Doppelkopf“ is a steel sculpture by the artist Ingo Domdey. It was installed in 1997 at the spot where the historic bridge once ended before it was demolished in 1994. The sculpture’s design is simple: it consists of five flat steel plates, shaped like heads, connected to one another. A rectangular opening offers a view of its counterpart across the way, the panoramic pillar in front of the Elbtor at Hartenfels Castle. Here, the multifaceted history of Torgau—from the Electoral Residence and the fortress to the encounter—is symbolically told through a single glance and connected to the present.
